About the Institute

The idea of ‘Symbiosis’ is nurtured by Dr. S. B. Mujumdar on the principles of Vedic thought ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ which means ‘World as One Family’. Symbiosis Law School (SLS) Hyderabad was established in 2014 inheriting splendid novelty, dynamism and excellence in the education of Symbiosis International University, Pune.

About the Centre

Established in 2018, the Centre for Corporate and Competition Law (CCCL) is a student-run centre aiming to provide a platform for students of the institute to explore and learn more about the nuances of Corporate and Competition Law, and to prepare them for the corporate world. To advance our agenda, CCCL has been successful in conducting multiple landmark events in the history of our institute, which has carved a niche corner for our centre within the legal fraternity. Amongst others, CCCL conducted our flagship event, the first-ever National Corporate Restructuring Competition in India in 2019. We have also spread our roots into banking law by conducting a three-day value-added course on Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. Over the past two years, we have invited eminent personalities like Mr. Dhanendra Kumar, first Chairperson of the CCI and Dr. K. D. Singh, Joint Secretary for Law at CCI conduct webinars on relevant topics.

About The Events

By taking giant steps, India has moved into the top 100 rankings in the World Bank’s ‘Doing Business 2019’ fact sheet. Laws and regulations governing the incorporation and running of business is undergoing rapid change.

The impetus for such flux came from changes in the world economy, advancements in information technology and the opening of world economy. While at some points, regulations need to provide more flexibility, at others, there is a need for strengthening the laws.

About the Conference[1]

Mediation as an Alternative Dispute Resolution is a process of resolving disputes with the help of a third neutral person who assists the parties in the dispute to reach a negotiated resolution. It is empowering every common person of the society and imparting justice in a cost-effective and expeditious manner.

Through awareness and confidence-building measures, this conference would help potential litigants as well as the general public, thereby reducing the burden on the courts. The expertise of the speakers as well as the esteemed dignitaries in the event is invaluable to the entire legal fraternity including lawyers, judges, law teachers, law students, and legal researchers.

Recent legislative changes have also placed reliance on mediation as a prominent mode of the dispute resolution process. It shows the increasing intent of the legislature to bring the same at the forefront which is also in tandem with the changing demands of the times. Better dissemination of knowledge and information regarding the process of mediation will build the faith of the general public in this process and, ultimately lead to better administration of justice.

In a dynamic country like ours, a speedy, equitable, and innovative dispute resolution system like mediation brings positive externalities for the economy, the society, the legal ecosystem, and the general prosperity of the nation as a whole.

DESCRIPTION

Seton Hall Law School’s Center for Health & Pharmaceutical Law & Policy is pleased to announce the Fifth Annual Health Law Works-in-Progress Retreat. The purpose of this retreat is to give health law scholars an opportunity to share their work and exchange ideas in a friendly, informal setting. The retreat is open to anyone with an academic appointment in health law, including professors, fellows, and visitors, in any institution of higher education (not just law schools).

During the retreat, we will engage in an in-depth discussion of 2-3 draft papers. For each paper, we will designate two commentators, each of whom will have about 10 minutes to present comments and suggestions. The author will then have 5 minutes to respond, after which we will open the floor to a general discussion among all retreat participants.

In addition, we will be adding a new feature to this year’s retreat: a lightning round of “raw meat” proposals, where participants will be invited to give 2-3 minute summaries of ideas they are planning to write about but have not yet fully fleshed out, followed by questions and discussion among the group as a whole.

If you are interested in having your paper presented, we ask that you submit a preliminary draft or, if that is not possible, a detailed introduction or outline of at least 5 pages, no later than November 20, 2020. Submissions should be sent to Catherine Finizio, at catherine.Finizio@shu.edu, who will anonymize them before distributing them to the selection committee. We will select the papers to be presented by December 11, and we will then identify two commentators for each of the papers. Final drafts will be due on January 22, 2021. Drafts will be made available to all participants on a password-protected website.

If you are interested in participating in the lightning round, please email carl.coleman@shu.edu, also by November 20. You may participate in the lightning round whether or not you have submitted a paper.

If you have any questions about the retreat, please contact Professor Carl Coleman at carl.coleman@shu.edu.

Event Timing

Date: 9th October 2020

Time: 5:30 PM

Lecture summary:

The lecture attempts to look at some important concepts and landmarks in international law and analyse how they have been impacted by developments in the field of women and children’s rights. The issues concerning women and children have transformed all the sources of international law, sovereignty, state responsibility, human rights and the status of non-state actors. These developments have created a more intrusive international law framework while highlighting universal global values. The lecture will also look at some of the critiques of this new approach to international law while looking to the future to see how these issues will unfold.

Transparency in International Arbitration: Publication of arbitral awards versus data protection

Date and Time

Thursday, September 24, 2020 | 10:15 PM – 11:45 PM
Virtual Event

In recent years, many arbitral institutions across the world have been adopting new rules regarding, on one hand, the publication of arbitral awards and, on the other hand, data protection.

Such topics are commonly intertwined and relate to a new era of transparency in international arbitration.

To some extent, the call for more transparency in international arbitration may find limits and constraints in the regulation of data protection across countries.

The issue of applicable law to data protection may also play a major role and limit the new policies put in place by arbitral institutions.

A single arbitration may be subject to data protection laws from different countries, with different standards and requirements.

Is there a role to be played by soft law? This panel will focus on this ongoing debate, with particular attention to the perspective of the arbitral institutions.

Seven of the ten largest companies globally are technology giants, and in many jurisdictions, scholars, lawmakers, and the public at large have articulated concerns that Big Tech has become too big. Many critics have called for a revival of stricter antitrust enforcement, more assertive antitrust authorities, and a general rebalancing of economic power. These new policy proposals challenge long-standing assumptions in antitrust and competition law and may threaten existing business models.

This conference aims to explore the role of antitrust and competition law in shaping the future of the digital economy. The conference will discuss what kinds of harms antitrust law needs to address in the digital age and how they can be specified and measured. It will also consider the relationship between antitrust law and broader concerns—including privacy, innovation, and inequality. Finally, the conference will consider policy recommendations, including changes in the interpretation of antitrust laws and doctrines, enforcement practices, and the institutional organization of agencies. We encourage submissions from all disciplines that contribute to related legal, economic, regulatory, or policy discussions.

The Information Society Project (ISP) is an intellectual center at Yale Law School, founded in 1997 by Professor Jack Balkin. The ISP explores issues at the intersection of law, technology, and society. It supports an international community of interdisciplinary scholars work to illuminate the complex relationships between law, technology, and society. The ISP produces scholarship, convenes legal experts, and hosts events to foster the cross-pollination of ideas and spark new collaborations.

The Thurman Arnold Project (TAP@Yale) launched in fall 2019 in response to the growing interest in competition enforcement by scholars, students, and the general public. The project is named in honour of Thurman Arnold, Yale Law Professor and head of the Antitrust Division from 1938-43, to capture the intellectual and enforcement tradition he represented, as well as his zeal for achieving competitive markets for the people of the United States. The project was founded by Professor Fiona Scott Morton, an economist at the School of Management, and is designed to bring together Yale scholars and students who are interested in antitrust to engage with one another and create rigorous antitrust research and policy, disseminate it, and enable links to enforcement and regulatory policy.

About the Conference

The aim of the conference series is to attract current research papers of the highest scholarly quality in the field of corporate governance. The conferences are primarily ‘academic to academic’ events with some participants from industry and the public sector including the practitioner partners of GCGC and other invited panelists. The practitioner partners are Zurich Insurance Group and Japan Exchange Group (JPX).

The sixth annual GCGC Conference will be hosted by Yale University on 11 – 12 June 2021. The Conference Committee is inviting researchers to submit recent papers on corporate governance (no maximum word count). In this context, corporate governance refers to the way in which private and public companies, enterprises, entrepreneurship, and financial institutions are governed and run in relation to their purpose, values, ownership, representation, accountability, financing, investment, performance, leadership, direction, management, employment, law, regulation, and taxation.

Papers will be selected for presentation from the submissions received. Ideally, these submissions should be based on new research that will not have been presented before. Each paper will be assigned a discussant and there will be ample time for questions and comments from the audience.

PAPER SELECTION PROCEDURE

A selection will be made by a Conference Committee from the papers that were submitted online before the deadline of 30 October 2020 (midnight CEST) using the form below.
– This event is strictly by invitation only and the number of places are limited to ensure quality engagement.
– Only one author will be invited to present a paper when selected, you may indicate who this is on the form.
– There are no formatting requirements for submissions.
– Full papers are preferred to extended abstracts, however, early drafts will be considered.
