A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Calcutta High Court in the wake of the violence taking place in various parts of the West Bengal after the results of Assembly Elections, 2021.
The PIL has been moved by a group of lawyers and have raised their concerns for the life and liberty of citizens’ of West Bengal which is under a danger due to the alleged violence and inaction by the State police.
The plea has impleaded authorities like the Union of India, Election Commission of India, State of West Bengal and various authorities positioned in the State police. The plea has mentioned about the non-compliance of duty on part of such authorities during the relentless violence which is taking place post-Assembly Elections, 2021.
The petitioners have submitted that the activists of the ruling party, upon the declaration of results, have attacked the houses of people who were supporting the opposition parties. Such activists have looted their properties, physically assaulted the innocent public who did nothing but cast their vote for opposition party.
The plea further raised the issue of fake news which is being circulated on social media and creating disharmony among various communities and religions within the State. The plea has stated that while all this is continuing within the territory of West Bengal, the administrative authorities are keeping mum over the entire issue.
The plea averred that the police personnel are being totally insensitive towards this issue and are least concerned about the number of deaths which are taking place due to difference of opinion amongst political parties.
The PIL has prayed for appointment of SIT for conducting an investigation regarding the ongoing issue; for taking adequate measures to stop the post-election violence; for deployment of central forces for atleast a month; and to direct respondents to pay adequate compensation to the families of deceased victims.
