SC directs Union/State govts to find solution to road blockade caused due to famers’ protests

The Apex Court, while hearing a writ petition, directed the Union government, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana government to find solution to the road traffic caused due to the farmers’ protests.

In the instant case, the petitioner, a resident of Noida, alleged that her regular travel from Delhi to Noida had turned into a nightmare as the distance of 20 minutes took 2 hours. The petitioner submitted that the road blockade due to the ongoing farmers’ protests had become a problematic situation.

The division bench considered the problem and stated that the solution lied in the hands of Union and State. Further, it added that in case protests are going on, the traffic should not suffer the repercussions as it in-turn disturbs the to and fro movement of citizens.

The bench inquired Solicitor General with respect to the status of solution which the Union ought to look for. It upheld the right of farmers to protest but not at the cost of intervening with the inflow and outflow of public.

In the month of July, the Supreme Court had directed the State governments of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to file their responses as to how they would remove the blockade. The governments filed an affidavit and responded that they were trying to make farmers understand the gravity of their illegal act of blocking roads which caused inconvenience to the travelers.

The Solicitor General informed the bench that steps were being taken to abide by the directions of the court. However, the petitioner averred that though various directions had been passed, the situation did not improve.

The bench directed that the public streets should not be blocked under any circumstance and the same has been emphasized upon again and again.
