We are witnessing an assault on the Freedom of Speech and Expression. Comedians like Munawar Farooqi are jailed for the jokes they never cracked. I hope this Court will upheld the Freedom of Speech and Expression as a cornerstone of the Constitution.
Kunal Kamra submitted the response of the Contempt Petition, which was filed against him.
In his response, he stated that, he made a joke, which is not a reality and it should not be taken seriously.
He submitted that his tweets were not published with the intention of dimnishing the faith of the people in the apex court.
Kunal Kamra alleged that, the Petitioner has no faith in the people of this country.
Kunal Kamra suggested that, Court should not take up this action on the basis of few jokes on Twitter.
Public faith on Judiciary cannot be shaken up by any public opinion but with the action of the Judiciary itself.
Here are few of the Controversial tweets, that Kunal Kamra made in the past:
On 12th November, Attorney General KK Venugopal permitted to initate contempt proceedings againsth Kunal Kamra. Various law students and lawyers approached the Court against his tweets.
