Closing the Gender Gap With INTERNSHIP BANK

Internship Bank started in mid-December 2019 has already secured 40 internships for students ranging from colleges such as Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, NAS College, Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, Symbiosis Law School, Aligarh Muslim University, KIIT School of Law, Saveetha School of Law and many more.

The online platform was the brain-child of Senior Associate Debolina Saha Narayanan of Hong Kong based US law firm, Dorsey & Whitney LLP. In the mission to inspire success amongst women, she is ably assisted by three young volunteers Shubhaankar Ray and Mansi Meena (both from NALSAR, University of Law) and Alice Tsui (from Hong Kong University). The platform was formed with the aim to provide internship opportunities to first generation female students who come from lesser-known colleges or colleges that are yet to have an established alumni network, or from humble backgrounds, so as to help shape careers of such young students.

Internship Bank whose motto is to “connect today’s successful women to tomorrow’s successful women” has now become a buzz word amongst college students. The platform not only connects internship opportunities extended by successful senior women professionals to upcoming female professionals but provides mentorship and safe working environment to young students who would otherwise struggle to source such opportunities. Thus in the long run, Internship Bank aims to bring about diversity and inclusion and close the gender gap in the legal profession.

As to what do students who have secured internships via this platform have to say about Internship Bank, a few quotes as below:

“I came across Internship Bank via a mail from my junior. I always wanted to have in-house experience and I finally spotted Aditya Birla Retail Fashion Ltd. in the list of internships available. What followed through was one of the most efficient process wherein the founder Ms. Debolina Saha Narayanan herself vetted my CV and had a conversation with me about the internship. What I really appreciated is that someone taking the effort to not just provide a list of internship opportunities like most platforms do but also acting as an intermediary to apply on your behalf and follow through till the end with the internship providers. Along with that, what makes it even more special is a chance to be under the mentorship of the founder herself despite her busy schedule. This endeavour of Internship Bank is truly commendable in giving a push to female students by placing them under the guidance of already successful female leaders. In the long journey of empowering women, Internship Bank is a genuine organization working towards the cause. A big thank you to Internship Bank for providing me with this opportunity. My best wishes to them for continuing their great work!”

Mitali Agarwal, Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai

“In a predominantly patriarchal profession such as law, Internship Bank is a great initiative by women, for women. Essentially creating opportunities for meritorious female students, the initiative strives to achieve much-needed gender equality in this profession. It provides safe space to women by helping them secure an internship along with assigning them under inspirational female mentors. Your relationship with Internship Bank does not end with you securing an internship, it starts there.

I have been one such student, who got an opportunity to intern in the area of my interest, during the lockdown, when most people were losing out on theirs. Ms. Debolina Saha, has been extremely kind to use her contacts and make sure female students get the exposure they deserve. She not only helped me secure an internship, but also made sure to be always present as a support and a friend. I wish Internship Bank a great success.”

Priya Venkatesun,Tamil Nadu National Law University

“Internship Bank is a platform that supports young female professionals and helps them take a step further in their careers. I’m a first generation lawyer and Internship Bank helped me secure one of my most successful internship opportunity, during the pandemic. The team doesn’t just provide you with an internship but remains with you through out your internship and until the end of your internship stint. This platform is student friendly and I wish the team all the luck for their future endeavours. Thank you Internship Bank for providing me with such a great opportunity!”
